Crime at ski resorts: how to protect yourself against theft

Jan 16, 2019.

Skiing in the sun is wonderful. But it's a little worrying leaving your expensive equipment outside mountain restaurants. While you enjoy a well-earned break with hot tea and soup, a thief could be waiting for the opportunity to strike.

Year after year, thieves have their eyes on expensive winter sports equipment. To prevent a fine day's skiing from being cut short, here's some advice:

  • Make use of the security facilities available, such as cellars, lockers or lockable ski racks.
  • If you can, keep your equipment in sight at all times. Stack your skis separately from each other rather than together; thieves can't spare the time to match pairs before walking off with them.
  • You can also protect your property by using mobile locking devices that fit in any ski suit. You can use them in much the same way as a bicycle lock to secure your equipment.
  • Avoid getting your kit mixed up with someone else's by making it distinctive with labels or stickers.
  • If you're hiring equipment, make sure that the agreement mentions how old the skis or the snowboard are.
