Q&A with festival director Robin Brühlmann

For Brühlmann, everything starts to revolve around Hive Air long before the event and continues to do so long after. In this interview, he talks about how much organisation and dedication goes into the festival’s planning, the latest music trends, challenges and his absolute favourite moment so far. Enjoy!

What does a typical day as an event organiser look like during the busiest phase – and what has been the craziest moment behind the scenes at a festival or club event you’ve ever experienced?

Robin: I get up, have breakfast and then take a look at my mail. I always try to plan my day in the morning. Structure is key to everything because things often don’t go as planned or you may be faced with new challenges and then it’s important to be able to act quickly. All of which is much easier when there is a plan.

Are there any tricks or hacks that help you keep up your energy levels for the festival?

Robin: Exercise, trying to get enough sleep and whatever helps day-to-day to maintain some calm. However, it never works. (Laughs)

You’ve made Hive Air a success four years running – what makes you and your team so strong?

Robin: Having a go at each other. (Laughs) No – of course not. We always have a brief meeting, just like a band, and wish each other luck and, above all, a lot of fun.

What was your personal vision behind Hive Air?

Robin: To create a unique day, one that will make people completely forget their worries for a moment. And, I also wanted it to be an innovative festival. With new music and fabulous production put together with a lot of passion. Plus, we are also just at the beginning of a great, long journey.

A personal special Hive Air moment that has stayed with you to this day?

Robin: The first ever Hive Air with Paul Kalkbrenner. Sky & Sand, his mega hit, as the sun was setting. Definitely something I’ll never forget.

How do you make sure that the event not only runs both smoothly but will be truly unforgettable? What are your personal ingredients for magical moments?

Robin: People. People make the party. When all is said and done, it’s a movement, a vibe that creates these moments. We provide the stage, but ultimately, it’s all down to our artists. And that’s where Hive Air excels, because we’ve simply got the best.

We provide the stage, but ultimately, it’s all down to our artists. And that’s where Hive Air excels, because we’ve simply got the best.

How do you decide which artists to include in the line-up?

Robin: We try to come up with a mix of superstars, underground and ticket sellers. However, while we have quite a small artist budget compared to other festivals, our experience and connections in the scene really make up for that and hence, we always manage to create a fantastic line-up. Plus, we’ve got connections with practically all of our acts, because many of them started with us at Hive.

What are the ingredients for a line-up that will leave a deep impression on both the audience and in the scene?

Robin: Good question. A mixture of trendy, legend, underground and of course the right music.

What are the trends you are currently seeing in the Swiss club and festival culture – in terms of music and beyond?

Robin: It’s definitely no longer just about the music and that’s been the case for a long time. It’s a lifestyle. Looks, being trendy, styling and using that to express something. Electronic music is something that is a lived experience. And it’s also become intergenerational. In terms of music, Afro house is currently really popular. That said, techno and good old house also attract a lot of people.

Which trends should definitely be on your radar as a music lover?

Robin: House. There is a definite trend towards that.

What is key for a genuine VIP experience for you?

Robin: Great drinks, a beautiful venue, where you have a good view of what’s going on. A place where you can party but also retreat for some quiet time. Good range of food choices and clean toilets.

What are your key tips for getting the most out of Hive Air as a visitor – including if you’re not a VIP or celebrity?

Robin: Get a gang of friends together and then just go with the flow at the event. That’s the best way to make sure you have a great time no matter what.

Impressions from Hive Air

Is there anything that visitors are completely unaware of but is crucial to the festival’s vibe?

Robin: Yes, a bunch of stuff. All of the people working behind the scenes, e.g. making sure there is a steady supply of drinks. All of the technicians, making sure that everything sounds good and is well lit. The logistics team, making sure that the artists get to the site and onto the stage on time. The security staff, the people coordinating PT etc. The list is really endless.

Are there any secret tips on how to get access to special areas or backstage moments – and how to do that with style?

Robin: (Laughs) No – sorry, there aren’t any really. It’s usually by invitation only. That said, if you’re good friends with a DJ who’s on, then you may be able to. But again, only if the DJ takes you with them. (Laughs)

Are there any tips for securing a spot in the first row as a visitor – without being a VIP?

Robin: Erm... a crazy outfit or maybe some really special dance moves. Just nothing too tacky, that’s less appealing.

If you had one piece of advice for a visitor that would boost their festival experience, what would it be?

Robin: Comfortable shoes. It’s key. Because it’s hard to dance if your feet are hurting and that is the top party killer.

Electronic music is something that is a lived experience.

What are the biggest changes you have seen over the past ten years – and what has stayed the same?

Robin: Everything has become more expensive and there are a lot more rules. Organising a big event takes a lot more effort now. Official requirements, safety, high fees, sustainability, etc. However, it also means that visitors are getting more out of it. What hasn’t changed is people’s love of music and coming together. And that is exactly what festivals combine. Being able to get away from it all for a short while and enjoying great music with others.

You have probably seen hundreds of artists perform. Which has been the most moving performance for you – and why?

Robin: Wow... let me think. I think, it was Paul Kalkbrenner’s first gig at the Street Parade. He’d just released his hit, but we weren’t sure whether the whole thing was going to work. But it did... and it was incredible to see.
