Self-determination in a sales job.

How Laura Balland achieves her goals with self-direction and flexibility.

Laura Balland worked in the hotel industry before joining Generali. Today, thanks to her self-organisation, a sense of purpose and a love of meeting people, she is a successful senior insurance consultant at the Generali agency in Martigny.

Laura, you originally worked in the hotel industry. How did you end up as an insurance consultant?

I wanted to learn something new, something meaningful. In the hotel industry, people were the focus – and I wanted to keep that. At Generali, I noticed that the role as an insurance consultant is very similar: it’s about listening, understanding and finding the right solutions.

What particularly appealed to you about the sales job?

The ability to self-direct appealed to me. I can plan my day myself, set priorities and arrange my work in a way that fits my life. If you’re organised, you can enjoy a lot of freedom here and be successful at the same time.

How do you stay flexible and still achieve your goals?

It requires discipline and clear structures. I plan my week in advance, know when I have customer appointments, but also set aside time for family and relaxation. If you take your job seriously, it works wonderfully. The great thing is that Generali trusts us to take responsibility ourselves.

Which skills from your previous job help you today?

For me, the most important thing is dealing with people. Whether in a hotel or with customers – compassion, attentiveness and reliability are key. I believe that you build long-term relationships by showing genuine interest. And that’s key in a sales job.

Flexibility doesn’t mean less responsibility – quite the contrary. People who work independently are better able to achieve goals and actively shape their lives.

What is your experience of working at Generali?

It’s very supportive. We have a strong team where people help each other. I was taken seriously and encouraged from the start – including during my apprenticeship at the Generali Academy. What counts is what you do, not where you come from.

What does success mean to you personally?

For me, success is when my customers are satisfied and I achieve or even exceed my targets. I want to offer my customers real added value – that’s what motivates me every day. And I think it’s great that more and more people are able to take on responsibility at Generali, regardless of gender or background.
