Starting over at almost 50.

Mauro, you used to be a trustee. What happened?

The company I worked for was shut down. I was almost 50 and unemployed. It wasn’t an easy time. I had to reinvent myself completely and thought: what’s next?

How did you come to Generali?

My brother works in the office at Generali and is always very positive about it. I had no idea about insurance, but the position as an insurance consultant appealed to me. I immediately received support – both professionally and personally. I was part of the team from day one.

What made it easier for you to get started?

The people. I wasn’t treated like a number. I was treated like a human being. My colleagues supported me and my agency manager’s door was always open. The Generali Academy also helped me learn everything I needed. I learnt how to prepare for customer meetings, make phone calls and what makes our products special. At the agency, too, my agency manager and my colleagues shared their many years of experience in a practical way. At Generali, I learnt everything I need to be successful in my job. 

What is important to you in your day-to-day life?

Listening. Many people need closeness, especially in a digital world. When you really listen, you build trust. And that’s exactly what our customers want.

What does success mean to you?

It’s not about numbers. For me, success means: I enjoy going to work in the morning. I see my customers, my team – and that fulfils me. That’s what I wish for everyone who chooses this profession. 

Is there an experience that particularly stuck with you?

Lots of them! But I was particularly touched when a customer thanked me from the bottom of his heart because I helped him during a financially difficult time. Moments like that are priceless.

What is your personal goal?

I would like to stay with Generali until I retire. Not out of convenience, but out of gratitude. Because I found exactly the place I was looking for. I am the best proof that a fresh start is possible at any age.
